1. The Peach Bowl offers great stories, an average destination and a brutal showdown for MSU

If Michigan State hadn’t given Mel Tucker a big contract extension, who knows, maybe Pat Narduzzi would coach the Spartans to the Peach Bowl this season. It’s still a pretty good scenario – MSU against ACC champion Pittsburgh and the former Spartans beloved defensive coordinator in the Peach Bowl, a 7 p.m. kick-off on December 30 in Atlanta.

MSU (10-2) finished No.10 in the final college football qualifying standings, announced on Sunday afternoon. Pitt (11-2), who beat Wake Forest in the ACC title game on Saturday night, is No. 12. There are several good scenarios with this game, starting with Narduzzi as a coach against the Spartans. Narduzzi was the architect and spirit behind MSU’s best defenses of the Mark Dantonio era. He left to be Pitt’s head coach after the 2014 season, so he wasn’t there for the schedule to slip into mediocrity which I think adds to the memory he remembers at East Lansing. . Harlon Barnett, current MSU secondary coach and Narduzzi’s successor as defensive coordinator (with Mike Tressell), will be on the opposing sideline. That’s great.

Should there be a threat inside Ovid-Elsie’s schools, Superintendent Ryan Cunningham is confident students and teachers would know what to do to stay safe.

They do exercises several times a year – both in the middle of the class and during lunch or break time – and have installed the SmartBoot system, started by a Fowlerville, district-wide company.

If someone deploys the “boot” – a small plate of steel that can barricade a door and make it nearly impossible to open – in a classroom, it sets off an alarm throughout the school with flashing red lights and a verbal “lockdown” alert, Cunningham mentioned.

You have to love it when small businesses are presented nationally. Especially when this small business is located here in Lansing!

During his opening monologue on The Late Show on Monday, November 29, Stephen Colbert spoke about a new initiative promoted by the show; small shopping.

Shop small in Lansing

To help small businesses that might be struggling during the pandemic, Colbert is encouraging his fans to post about a small business that could use a boost using the hashtag, #ColbertSmallBizBump. It helps get the company featured on The Late Show. And when that happens, the small businesses that end up getting featured see their sales increase dramatically.

In the Monday night episode, a small business here in Lansing put on the show: Pets!

Check out where you can see them in the clip below. If you want, you can jump to it right in the video. The small business segment starts at 3:19 minutes and you will see Preuss Pets around 4:56 minutes.

Was that cool?

Granted, the clip wasn’t very long, and it wasn’t a commercial with Tom Hanks, but it was still super cool.

Where to buy small in Lansing

Preuss Pets is just one of many small local businesses in Lansing that would be great for buying holiday gifts. With so many local store closings due to COVID, it’s important to remember to shop and support small businesses. Check out the gallery below for other great places in the greater Lansing area that are great places to get holiday gifts.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A woman from Lansing says she’s filling a missing piece the Lansing community needs, and it’s a bookstore full of African-American writers.

Nyshell Lawrence is the owner of the Socialight Society bookstore. A trip to a bookstore in 2017 sparked her new idea, and in the midst of a pandemic, she brought this idea.

Just 4 years ago, Lawrence noticed that something was missing in Lansing.

“My husband took me on a date at a local bookstore and when I saw the section on women of color it was so small. I felt really disappointed, I felt invisible and not celebrated, ”said Lawrence, owner of the Socialight Society bookstore.

She said she didn’t want anyone else to feel what she was feeling.
“We walk in so many spaces that we’re the minority and I just think it’s really important for us to be able to have a place where we can go and say, this is a place where I belong. I see women who look like me, ”Lawrence said.

This month Lawrence opened his own Socialight Society Bookshop.

“It made a lot of sense for us to bring the celebration to the center of town. And now, every time someone walks out of Washington Square, they know there is a space where black women are celebrated, ”Lawrence said. “Women come in just to say thank you. They are amazed to see so many books written by black authors, ”she continued.

From local authors to well-known authors and from poetry books to children’s books.
“I am the mother of four daughters. So I know for a fact when they pick up a book and they see a little girl who looks like them or they see a boy who represents someone in their class. It means so much that it’s so impactful, ”she said.

Lawrence says his bookstore is a safe space for everyone.
“Everyone is invited. Everyone is welcome, these are stories that everyone can relate to,” she said.

It is also a place of which she is proud.
“For an idea to be in the Notes app on your phone one day and then like the next day, you’re in a shared space where people come in. It is absolutely unbelievable. It’s bigger than I could have imagined, ”she said.

Currently, Lawrence shares the space with another business in downtown Lansing and is saving to move elsewhere. She is also raising funds to create a free community library for children of color. For more information on the Socialight Society bookstore visit their website here.

Lansing State Journal columnist Graham Couch rates the Spartans on a scale of 1 to 10.

OFFENSE: 1

Even though Michigan State’s defense had been up to the challenge at Ohio State, MSU’s offense fell far short of any kind of pace. Ten of the Spartans’ twelve possessions failed a second first try. Their only substantial training – until the end of the game, when Ohio State was playing saves – died after 13 plays and with a 46-yard missed field goal. There have been a few promising third-down conversions that have avoided three-and-outs. But that’s about all. It was a miserable day – for Kenneth Walker, who only wore six times and was hampered, for Payton Thorne, who only made 14 of 36 passes and was under duress, and for Jayden Reed, who has finished the match with his foot in a boot on the sidelines.

DEFENSE: 0

MSU allowed seven straight touchdowns to start the game and the Buckeyes 500 yards in the first half to lead 49-0. It couldn’t be worse. The Spartans were completely outclassed. They put almost no pressure on Buckeyes QB CJ Stroud, who made 32 of 35 throws and six touchdown passes, and was nowhere near adequately covering the exceptional group of receivers at Ohio State. MSU’s pass defense, a problem for several games now, has been gutted by the Buckeyes.

SPECIAL TEAMS: 5

When your punter is your star, it’s rarely a good day. Bryce Baringer averaged 49.7 yards on nine punts, including one for 74 yards and a few early booms that put Ohio State in a tough starting position. It didn’t matter. Kicker Matt Coghlin missed his only field goal, far to the right at 46 yards. MSU did nothing of note in the second leg.

TRAINING: 3

I don’t understand why the cornerbacks still play 10 yards from the receivers when MSU is down 42 points. I mean, try something else. Pass defense is a problem. How much of a schematic I don’t know. I think a lot of it is talent. We’ll find out from the decisions Mel Tucker makes during the offseason with his staff and in the transfer portal. MSU didn’t have what it took to compete with Ohio State and I’m not sure if any coach could have changed that. But MSU’s coaches certainly didn’t seem to have answers. The only bright spot, I thought, was Tucker’s tone in the post-game and the message he gave to his team – one of tough love, unity and soul-searching. He did not reprimand them.
