Fulton Street Farmers Market adopts gleaning program for excess food

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A farmers’ market in Grand Rapids is adopting its own program to distribute excess food to those in need.

“These are fruits or vegetables that would otherwise have been thrown away,” says Dana Eardley, general manager of the Fulton Street Farmers Market.

According to USDA.

For eight years, Heartside Gleaning Initiative has gleaned from the Fulton Street Farmers Market. For the first time, the peasant market will carry out gleaning operations alone.

Eardley says the move helps streamline food distribution opportunities. She adds that the Heartside Gleaning Initiative made it easier for them to transition to distribute in places like the Heartside neighborhood, God’s Kitchen, The Other Way Ministries and the Community Food Club.

Eardley added that there is a great need for volunteers also at that time. The program requires 10 to 12 volunteers on Saturdays to help with their operations.
