Michigan is cold. These airports have direct flights to hot weather
Mid-Michigan residents might crave a warmer vacation, as meteorologists predict the area will have a more “winter” season this year than last year.
But where can you catch a direct flight without braving the Detroit Metro Airport?
Lansing Capital Region International Airport offers flights to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, while Grand Rapids and Flint Airports offer flights to warmer U.S. destinations.
As always, travelers should be alert to COVID-19 travel advice. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all travelers be fully immunized for domestic flights and not travel if they have been exposed to COVID-19.
For international travel, passengers are obligatory to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to the United States
No exhibitions? Here are some places you can get away from the nearby airports:
From Lansing Capital Region International Airport
After January 3, United Airlines will withdraw from the Lansing area airport. But that doesn’t end service from the airport to sunny destinations.
There are no direct domestic flights west, southwest or south from Lansing. But the airport serves the Caribbean and Central America with some non-stop flights.
“You can catch an 8am flight from Lansing and be on the beach at noon,” said Katherine Japinga, director of marketing at the Capital Region International Airport.
Apple Vacations begins service from Lansing on January 28 to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Cancun, Mexico. The airport offers at least two flights per week to each destination, Japinga said.
Flights to Mexico are Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Flights to the Dominican Republic will be every Thursday and Sunday starting January 30.
Japinga urged travelers to book flights as soon as possible to stay ahead of the spring break rush.
Parking at the airport?
- Short-term parking is $ 14 per day
- Long-term parking costs $ 10 per day
“Apple Vacations encourages people to use travel agents to book their flights,” Japinga said. “They also have all-inclusive vacation packages and they let travel agents know.”
Although the Capital Region airport does not offer direct flights to hot domestic destinations, travelers can fly to Chicago, Detroit and Washington DC and take connecting flights, Japinga said.
Airport CEO Nicole Noll-Williams is working with these three hubs on more frequent options.
“People feel more comfortable traveling with the vaccines,” she said, adding that they “are ready to take a vacation that they haven’t had a chance to use. ‘last year”.
From Flint’s Bishop International Airport
An hour’s drive northeast of Lansing, Bishop Flint International Airport offers direct flights to several warmer US destinations.
Bishop CEO Nino Sapone has urged travelers to book flights as soon as possible, as prices can triple in a matter of weeks. He said Flint is a hub for Allegiant Airlines, which offers low-cost à la carte flights to regional airports. Allegiant tickets are only available on the airline’s website, so third-party booking sites do not offer the flights.
So where can you go from Flint?
- In season, there are several flights to Florida.
- Year-round, travelers can book tours to Las Vegas, Phoenix, and a number of Florida destinations, including Orlando and Tampa Bay.
Looking to park in Bishop?
- Terminal parking costs $ 10 per day without shuttle service
- Shuttle parking costs $ 8 per day and $ 56 per week
Bishop does not offer direct flights to international destinations. Instead, Sapone said, the airport offers flights to Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina, where connecting flights are available. Charlotte, for example, has three daily flights to the Caribbean.
From Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International Airport
One hour west of Lansing is Michigan’s second busiest airport behind the Detroit metro, Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.
There, travelers can find direct flights to a wide selection of hot destinations:
- Year round, the airport offers flights to Las Vegas, a small airport in Phoenix, Dallas and Florida.
- In season, airlines offer flights to Los Angeles, Austin, New Orleans, Savannah-Hilton Head, Phoenix International Airport and other destinations in Florida.
“My suggestions for anyone booking a plane ticket: Book as soon as you know you want to leave, ”said CEO Tory Richardson.
He saw the cost of flights double in a matter of days, but said some destinations would still offer cheaper flights. Most of the time, prices for domestic flights will increase significantly in the month or week after the flight. Richardson urged those looking for international destinations to book at least six months in advance.
“People like to go south to experience warm climates, and the airlines know people buy these flights to get to a warm place,” Richardson said. “They also know that in the summer there isn’t a lot of demand to go somewhere warm.”
The airport offers several car parks:
- Short-term garage costs $ 24 per day and $ 168 per week
- Long-term garage costs $ 18 per day and $ 126 per week
- The long-term North Lot costs $ 10 per day and $ 70 per week without a shuttle service.
- Long Term East Lot costs $ 15 per day and $ 105 per week and is valid on card only.
He said Grand Rapids is well positioned to serve loyal United travelers who lose their favorite airline in Lansing.
The airport is undergoing a $ 90 million expansion project to modernize its TSA checkpoint and expand its lobby and other upgrades. When completed, the airport is expected to serve more airlines and offer more daily flights.
“Airlines felt during the pandemic that residents of western Michigan were more willing to travel and they are putting more flights in our way to take advantage of it,” said Richardson.
