Newtown climbs to second place as Walker’s strike sinks Flint

JAKE Walker’s astonishing strike saw Newtown edging out Flint Town United in second place for Christmas.

The Robins emerged victorious in a deadly home encounter that saw the visitors end with 10 men after Mike Wilde was sacked.

Newtown were worthy winners and set the tone from the start as Lufumpa Mwandwe and Jordan Evans stretched the visiting defense who had no answer but to concede a multitude of free kicks.

However, Newtown failed to capitalize with Evans fending off two free kicks from the edge of the box in the opening 20 minutes.

It was no surprise when the pressure finally kicked in after 36 minutes when Callum Roberts fell victim to yet another reckless challenge from Jake Phillips with Aaron Williams holding his cool to pass goalkeeper Jon Rushton from the point penalty.

The remainder of the half saw the Robins comfortably defend their lead with the Deesiders strangely cut off on offense and failing to create meaningful openings throughout.

The second half was just 10 minutes old when Wilde received his marching orders after being tried for nudging Kieran Mills-Evans into a crowded goal mouth.

Newtown doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark with Walker making a spectacular volley past Rushton 20 yards after Flint’s defense failed to clear a long throw from Aaron Williams.

Flint’s best chance of the game came soon after with Callum Bratley releasing Mark Cadwallader whose low shot from the straight was parried only by goaltender Dave Jones, with the hosts recovering to clear their lines.

Newtown comfortably finished the remainder of the contest to celebrate three richly earned points and move on to Christmas second in the standings.
