Real Crime Author Tobin T. Buhk Brings Latest Article to Lansing

LANSING, Michigan – True crime writer Tobin T. Buhk brought his latest book to Lansing‘s own Deadtime Stories bookstore on Saturday afternoon. Buhk’s latest book, “Cold Case Michigan,” explores the dark side of the state’s history.

“I’m here at Bedtime Stories to sign my books, the latest of which, which is number 13 in my catalog, is ‘Cold Case Michigan,’ where I look, I pull out the pages of some of the most vexing unsolved crimes in Michigan history, ”Buhk said.

This latest book covers cold cases statewide, but Buhk says the story he finds most compelling is about Dr. Frank Loomis.

“There is the case of a doctor, an anesthesiologist in 1927 in Detroit who is accused, tried and not found guilty of the murder of his wife. And that case, for one reason or another, resonates with me, ”he said.

The mystery of who killed Loomis’ wife Grace has been unsolved for almost 100 years, and it’s even stranger than fiction.

“It really is a closed room mystery,” he said. “The murder took place inside a sealed house, and the motive that was offered for it was ‘the other woman’, which is a really fascinating storyline. And it took place in the 1920s. So the Roaring Twenties, so there were speakeasies and that kind of underground life that the doctor had locked himself into.

Deadtime Stories owner Jenn Carpenter says she’s still thrilled that Buhk is stopping by.

“Oh, we love having Tobin. This is the second time he has visited us. He’s written so many great books on real Michigan crime so we love having him, ”she said.

Carpenter says that as the COVID protocols allow, the bookstore would like to establish a schedule for author visits going forward.

“We’ve only really been doing them here and there recently, but we’re very happy to be able to set a regular schedule, hopefully in the near future,” she said.

Buhk’s latest book also includes the cold murder of politician Senator Warren Hooper and possible serial killers right here in Lansing in the 1970s. To learn more about these unsolved cases, you’ll need to read on.
